Volunteer

The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer would not be possible without the help of thousands of dedicated volunteers. The local event offices are always looking for more "helping hands," and this year there are even more ways to get involved. These include: community outreach, office assistance, event support and more.

Volunteering is an easy and rewarding way to become involved with the Avon Walk! Whether you join us one night a week, occasionally for special projects and programs, or during the Event, your participation is vital to our success.

Volunteer vs. Crew: Volunteers support the Walk throughout the Event Season on specific projects or during the actual Event as Day Volunteers, working at least one shift for a couple of hours. Crew members are registered participants on the Avon Walks. They have a specific, assigned task and are members of a designated Crew Team; they commit to the entire event weekend, pay a registration fee, camp overnight, and may even fundraise. HOW YOU CAN HELP

Office Support: We always have a need for good volunteers to help us with various office projects including mailings, data entry, local phone support and welcome calls. If you have a couple of hours to give Monday - Friday, between 9 AM - 6 PM, we’d love to have you help us out.

Participant Outreach Nights: On weeknights throughout the event season, a cadre of dedicated and outgoing volunteers come together to help us reach out to potential participants. These volunteers are our greatest tool for recruiting walkers. Through phone calls, we let potential walkers know about Introduction Meetings in their area, answer their questions about the Avon Walk, and motivate them to make the decision to register. This is one of the greatest ways to personally influence the success of the Walk.

Introduction Meetings: Introduction Meetings are one of our best tools to register walkers. These information sessions cover every aspect of the Walk, from fundraising to training to specific details about the weekend. We conduct Introduction Meetings throughout the entire Event area. We need your help during these meetings to check in attendees, hand out information, and help with the registration process. This is a great way to get involved if you cannot make it into the office during the week.

Avon Walk Ambassadors: This is a brand new program developed to engage our great volunteers. You will develop outreach plans and represent the Avon Walk at events in your community, and get the word out about the Walk. Come up with your own great ideas; really take ownership of your commitment to making the 2007 Avon Walk for Breast Cancer the most successful yet!

The Avon Walk Ambassador program is ongoing. Please contact the Volunteer Outreach Coordinator in the local office for more details and to find out if this opportunity is right for you.

Motivational Signs: We will be collecting posters and signs to hang along the route of the 2007 Avon Walk all year. We’re looking for motivational, colorful messages of encouragement to hang at the Quick Stops and Rest Stops along the way. Get a group of people together and have a poster making party. This is also a great way to get your kids involved and can be done anywhere at anytime throughout the season.

This project is ongoing. Once you have some posters completed, schedule a time to bring them by the office.

Event Support: During the Event weekend, volunteers are needed at Event Eve (Friday before the Event), Opening Ceremony (Saturday of the Event), along the route at Cheering Stations (Saturday and Sunday during the Event), at the Wellness Village to help set up tents for Walkers (both Saturday and Sunday), and at Closing Ceremony (on Sunday). Help out for a couple of hours or sign up for the whole weekend. It takes hundreds of volunteers to make the Avon Walk the amazing experience that it is!

Event Volunteer forms come out 6 - 8 weeks before the event. In order to volunteer during the weekend of the Walk, you must fill out one of these forms. Please check the website for updates as the 2007 event approaches and to download the form once it is available.
